Mahmoud<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday, 18 February, 2026, Another Look will present Nobel prizewinning Patrick Modiano\u2019s 2007 novella,&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyrb.com\/products\/in-the-cafe-of-lost-youth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In the Caf\u00e9 of Lost Youth<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em>(New York Review Books). The event will take place, as always, at 7 p.m. at Levinthal Hall, 424 Santa Teresa Street on the Stanford campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panelists will include Stanford Prof.&nbsp;<strong><u><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dlcl.stanford.edu\/news\/retirement-and-career-robert-pogue-harrison\">Robert Pogue Harrison<\/a><\/u><\/strong>, author, director&nbsp;of&nbsp;Another Look, host of the radio talk show and podcast series&nbsp;<em>Entitled Opinions<\/em>, and a regular contributor to&nbsp;<em>The New York Review of Books,<\/em>&nbsp;and Stanford Prof.&nbsp;<strong><u><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.altaonline.com\/california-book-club\/a61959524\/qanda-a-conversation-with-tobias-wolff-david-l-ulin\/\">Tobias Wolff<\/a><\/u><\/strong>, one of America\u2019s leading writers and&nbsp;the founding director&nbsp;of&nbsp;Another Look, as well as a recipient of the&nbsp;National Medal of Arts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will be joined by&nbsp;<strong><u><a href=\"https:\/\/anotherlook.stanford.edu\/?p=4793\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chloe Edmondson<\/a><\/u><\/strong>, a lecturer in Stanford\u2019s Department of French and Italian. She is the France-Stanford Center Fellow for the&nbsp;Roxane Debuisson Collection on&nbsp;Paris&nbsp;History. You will remember her from our event&nbsp;Madame de LaFayette\u2019s&nbsp;<em>The Princesse de Cl\u00e8ves<\/em>&nbsp;in 2019. Actor, director, classicist, Stanford Prof.&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/anotherlook.stanford.edu\/?p=3905\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Rush Rehm<\/span><\/a>,&nbsp;<\/strong>will round out the panel.  (You will remember Rush from our 2016 event on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/stories\/2016\/04\/another-look-book-club-spotlights-joseph-conrads-shadow-line-novella\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joseph Conrad\u2019s&nbsp;<\/a><em><u><a href=\"https:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/stories\/2016\/04\/another-look-book-club-spotlights-joseph-conrads-shadow-line-novella\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Shadow-Line: A Confession<\/a><\/u>.<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nobel announcement recognized Modiano\u2019s \u201cconsistent exploration of memory and the elusive nature of personal history, often set against the backdrop of occupied Paris.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has been praised for his \u201csubtle, clear style and his ability to bring anonymous lives to light, making him a modern-day Proust in the eyes of some.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anotherlook.stanford.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Modiano-book.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"371\" height=\"595\" src=\"https:\/\/anotherlook.stanford.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Modiano-book.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6176\" style=\"width:219px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anotherlook.stanford.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Modiano-book.jpg 371w, https:\/\/anotherlook.stanford.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Modiano-book-187x300.jpg 187w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 371px) 100vw, 371px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<em>World Literature Today,&nbsp;<\/em>\u201cModiano\u2019s fictional world is not postapocalyptic, like the fictional worlds of Beckett, but postrelational . . . a world where familiar patterns, whether placed in memory, neighborhoods, or situations, are dispersed and left to languish on the wind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Another Look has done a Q&amp;A interview with&nbsp;Modiano\u2019s translator, Chris Clarke.
