In Albert\u2019s Camus<\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u2019s 1942\u00a0The Stranger,\u00a0<\/em>a French shipping clerk named Meursault shoots an Arab man on the Mediterranean beach.\u00a0Algerian author\u00a0Kamel Daoud<\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0retells the story from the point of view of the dead man’s family: \u201cMy brother\u2019s name was Musa. He had a name. But he\u2019ll remain \u2018the Arab\u2019 forever.\u201d\u00a0

Another Look discussed\u00a0The Stranger\u00a0<\/em>in 2015 \u2013 now we’ll read Daoud’s 2013 retelling of the story, seventy years later.\u00a0Please join us at 7 P.M. (PST) on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at the Stanford Humanities Center when Another Look presents Kamel Daoud\u2019s\u00a0The Meursault Investigation<\/a><\/u>.\u00a0<\/em>James Campbell,writing in the\u00a0Wall Street Journal<\/em>, calls it \u201ca shrewd critique of a country trapped in history\u2019s time warp.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Panelists will include Stanford Prof.  Robert Pogue Harrison<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, author, director of Another Look, host of the radio talk show and podcast series Entitled Opinions<\/em>, and a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books<\/em>, and Stanford Prof. Tobias Wolff<\/strong>, one of America\u2019s leading writers and the founding director of Another Look, as well as a recipient of the National Medal of Arts.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanford lecturer Michaela Hulstyn<\/strong> will round out the panel. Her Unselfing: Global French Literature at the Limits of Consciousness<\/em> was published with the University of Toronto Press in 2022. Her research interests encompass the global French literary world, including texts by modernist figures in France and Belgium along with writers from Algeria, Rwanda, and Morocco. Like Camus, Daoud was born in Algeria. He says Camus \u201ccured\u201d him in a time and place where ideology has become preeminent.  \u201cHis priority is not an ideology, but his life, his body,\u201d according to The Financial Times<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe problem was I liked doubt,\u201d Daoud said.”I was deeply wary of totalitarian explanations. I was born in a collectivist period. The primary value was the group, not the individual. And I am profoundly individualistic.\u201d He now lives under a fatwa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
