Please join us for a discussion of\u00a0Herman Melville<\/a><\/u><\/strong>‘s classic short story\u00a0Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street<\/a><\/u><\/em>\u00a0at 7 p.m. (PST) on Monday, January 8, at Levinthal Hall in the Stanford Humanities Center at 424 Santa Teresa Street on the Stanford campus. This is a hybrid event, so you can come in person or via zoom, but we encourage you to register\u00a0either way (link below).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Panelists will include Stanford Prof. Robert Pogue Harrison<\/a><\/strong>, author, director of Another Look, host of the radio talk show and podcast series Entitled Opinions<\/em>, and a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books<\/em>, and Stanford Prof. Tobias Wolff<\/a><\/strong>, one of America\u2019s leading writers and the founding director of Another Look, as well as a recipient of the National Medal of Arts. Two special guests will round out the high-powered panel out to four: Robert\u2019s brother Thomas Harrison<\/a><\/u><\/strong>, professor of European Languages and Transcultural Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Katie Peterson<\/a><\/u><\/strong>, an award-winning poet and Stanford alum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Melville is most famous for his masterpiece Moby Dick, <\/em>but his 1853 Bartleby <\/em>is a short wonder, and his protagonist\u2019s repeated \u201cI prefer not to\u201d is one of the most famous lines in American literature. Novelist Sophie Hannah, writing in <\/a>The Independent<\/a>,<\/em> called it \u201ca flawless and ambiguous work of art.\u201d She writes, \u201cBartleby, blank in character, tests the characters of others. \u2026 Bartleby is pure enigma.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The short story is famous and widely available \u2013 buy a copy on amazon or abebooks.com<\/a>, in local libraries and in bookstores. It’s also widely available online \u2013 google for links. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
