Although Frankenstein\u00a0was a special two-hour session with four discussants, we barely scratched the surface of the aesthetic and moral dimensions of the novel.\u00a0As promised, we focused on the book as a literary work: a flowering of the romantic imagination, as well as a pioneering landmark in science fiction. Though the Another Look director,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dlcl.stanford.edu\/people\/robert-pogue-harrison\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/dlcl.stanford.edu\/people\/robert-pogue-harrison&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1514275122414000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHWU8gwdysr6uEyq3wsOCjvDQZ8Pw\">Robert Pogue Harrison<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dlcl.stanford.edu\/people\/robert-pogue-harrison\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/dlcl.stanford.edu\/people\/robert-pogue-harrison&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1514275122414000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHWU8gwdysr6uEyq3wsOCjvDQZ8Pw\"><\/a>, had some penetrating observations about moral responsibility for invention in a technology age \u2013 we are all heirs of Victor Frankenstein, who abdicated responsibility and abandoned the creature he had created.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC04491.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4475\" title=\"DSC04491\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC04491-300x279.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anotherlook.stanford.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC04491-300x279.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/anotherlook.stanford.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC04491-1024x952.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/anotherlook.stanford.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC04491-322x300.jpeg 322w, https:\/\/anotherlook.stanford.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC04491.jpeg 1032w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Dr. Audrey Shafer<\/strong>, a Stanford professor and anesthesiologist on the steering committee for \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/medicineandthemuse\/events\/FrankensteinAt200.html\">Frankenstein@200<\/a>\u00a0campus-wide events, made opening remarks, and presented the panelists with Frankenstein mugs, a keepsake for participation in the Stanford program. Robert Harrison\u00a0moderated the discussion. He was joined by three panelists who have all taught\u00a0<em>Frankenstein\u00a0<\/em>at Stanford: French Prof.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dlcl.stanford.edu\/people\/dan-edelstein\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/dlcl.stanford.edu\/people\/dan-edelstein&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1514275122414000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG7xe1Dt5WfMjUd2GToeX_Zn4A7hw\">Dan Edelstein<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0Classics Prof.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/classics.stanford.edu\/people\/andrea-nightingale\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/classics.stanford.edu\/people\/andrea-nightingale&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1514275122414000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH1pcjBQgRtRI8DdS2XGxhXQmySbw\">Andrea Nightingale<\/a><\/strong>, and former Stanford fellow\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ingapierson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/ingapierson.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1514275122414000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHKysIYviKwKDk_lsGhlAyvrP2QPg\">Inga Pierson<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Another Look&#8217;s winter event on\u00a0<em>Frankenstein\u00a0<\/em>was\u00a0part of Stanford&#8217;s year-long celebration of the bicentennial of the book&#8217;s 1818 publication, when the young author was twenty years old.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4477\" title=\"DSC07468\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC07468-247x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"247\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anotherlook.stanford.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC07468-247x300.jpeg 247w, https:\/\/anotherlook.stanford.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC07468-845x1024.jpeg 845w, https:\/\/anotherlook.stanford.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DSC07468.jpeg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 247px) 100vw, 247px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Her tale has proved timely, even prophetic, given our current concerns about artificial intelligence, animal-to-human transplants, and stem cells.\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Frankenstein\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">explores role of conscience in creation, and asks: What does it mean to be human? Is it wise to play God? And don&#8217;t we all fear that our creative triumphs will turn against us, destroying us and those we love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to critic <strong>Harold Bloom<\/strong>, \u201cThe greatest paradox and most astonishing achievement of Mary Shelley&#8217;s novel is that the monster is <em>more human <\/em>than his creator.
