My name is Albina. I am a teacher of Russian literature from Saint-Petersburg. Writing in English about literature isn’t easy task for me .
I cannot stop to the dialog with myself after the discussion about The Double of Feydor Dostoevsky.
There were two questions from auditory and I have my own answers. It would be great if it becomes interesting for you.
The first question was about why in the end of the story the doctor spoke with German accent and before he spoke in the normal Russian. From one side, in the beginning of XIX century in Russian literature Devil looks like German person(N.Gogol ). This tradition of Russian literature took from Goethe’s Faust .
From other side, you can meet a Russian-German in Pushkin’s The Queen of Spades, in Goncharov’s Oblomov, in Pogorelsky’s Black Hen. They are not always the symbol of evil, but always they could not understand “the puzzle of Russian soul”.
The second question was what about this story. Is it about a psychopathic person?
I think, that clue hidden in the Russian word “Душевнобольной”. Golydkin is not a person, he is a unhealthy soul. This soul finds the right way, but cannot to do this. The Double mess up him. (In “Brothers Karamazov” the Double will turn of in a servant of Devil). The poor soul goes on the circus of Hell and in the end of his way he found another Krestyan Ivanovich, who speaks with terrible German accent…
The Double pushes Goladkin to terrible Krestyan Ivanovich. Who is another Krestyan Ivanovich?
Albina, Stay tuned for the podcast, which will be posted on this site in the next few days. It will address some of your questions.
